Go to the bottom and click on the link and vote for the name of my Startup.
Selecting a name for your Startup is not easy. Or at least it has not been easy for me. There are just so many rules you should follow. It has to be a name people can easily spell. It has to be something memorable. It has to be a name that will inspire. It has to be a name that tells everyone what product you are selling. Then of course it can't be a name already being used by another business. Especially, if that business is in your space.
Then in today's social media age you have to choose a name that is not being used by anyone else on any of the social media platforms. So you have to check FB, Twitter, LinkedIn and all the other social media platforms out there. Now I know some will tell you that it does not matter if your social media is not exactly the same as you business name. But from my point of view it does matter. Why take the chance of someone confusing your business with another business. Checking social media has been frustrating for me. Especially, when I have a name that I really like. Only to find out that someone else has the name on Twitter already. The frustration grows further when I see that no one has tweeted from the handle for a few years.
Then there is the matter of domain names. The days of .com being the only domain available are long gone. Now .io and .co are popular. There are hundreds of domains available. You can even make up your domain now. But which one should you choose to go along with your name. Some will say you have to choose .com. Some will say to only choose .io or .co if your customers will only be from the Tech world. While others say that even if you have to pick a name you don't like to obtain a .com you should do this. Should you only use one domain or should you purchase several domains. That is another question to be answered.
You also have to to do a search of the Secretary of State Corporations for the state you plan on having your business operate. To make sure there is not another business currently operating with the same name that you are considering. You also should do a Trademark search to make sure no one has Trademarked the name you are considering. I know some will say that it does not matter if a business with the name you are considering is Trademarked. But why risk any potential litigation from that other business? Just choose another name.
You also have to make sure the possible name does not have a derogatory meaning when translated to another language. Will your business go worldwide like Uber or Airbnb? Odds are that it will not be that successful. But what if it is that successful and your name means something bad in another language?
I have gone through 1724 possible names during a three month naming process. I even broke out the dictionary looking for names. I have used @NameRobotEn and @SquadHelp as methods to assist me in this process. I also used feedback from other people to help me pick a name.
Below is a link to vote on the six names I have come up with as a possible name for my Startup.
I ask that you take the time to vote and give me your feedback.
For those of you who have named your own business. How did you come up with your name? Did I miss anything in the naming process?
